Abstract Introduction Patients are routinely started on strong opioid analgesia after surgery with most receiving a prescription for these to continue discharge. We examine the prescribed in our unit, comparing ERAS principles from EACTS. aimed reduce total equivalent dose of morphine discharge by implementing principles. Results 20% later. used dispensed third. Conclusions identified significant issue term initiated measures which have resulted positive change. Our next cycle will measure outcome changes long-term implement multi-disciplinary approach try reducing burden further.

Acute pain after thoracic surgery predicts long-term post-thoracotomy pain.
OBJECTIVE Long-term pain is a common sequela of thoracotomy, occurring in approximately 50% of patients 2 years after thoracic surgery. Despite this alarming statistic, little is known about the factors responsible for the transition of acute to chronic pain. The aim of the present study is to identify predictors of long-term post-thoracotomy pain. DESIGN Follow-up was for 1.5 years for patie...

Outcome and risk factors were analyzed. RESULTS In hospital mortality was 13%, perioperative neurologic injur...
متن کاملLong-term opioid therapy reconsidered.
In the past 20 years, primary care physicians have greatly increased prescribing of long-term opioid therapy. However, the rise in opioid prescribing has outpaced the evidence regarding this practice. Increased opioid availability has been accompanied by an epidemic of opioid abuse and overdose. The rate of opioid addiction among patients receiving long-term opioid therapy remains unclear, but ...
متن کاملUnderstanding long-term opioid prescribing for non-cancer pain in primary care: a qualitative study
BACKGROUND The place of opioids in the management of chronic, non-cancer pain is limited. Even so their use is escalating, leading to concerns that patients are prescribed strong opioids inappropriately and alternatives to medication are under-used. We aimed to understand the processes which bring about and perpetuate long-term prescribing of opioids for chronic, non-cancer pain. METHODS We h...

BACKGROUND Increasing overuse of opioids in the United States may be driven in part by physician prescribing. However, the extent to which individual physicians vary in opioid prescribing and the implications of that variation for long-term opioid use and adverse outcomes in patients are unknown. METHODS We performed a retrospective analysis involving Medicare beneficiaries who had an index e...
